GOOD VIBES COUNSELLING
E-Counselling and psychotherapy
I'm Valerie and welcome- I'm so happy you're here. This will be a journey but I'm here to walk with you on that journey.
Genuine, down-to-earth and truly flexible hours so that you can book your sessions at YOUR convenience.
In an effort to support folks who are looking for personalized, evidenced-based therapy services in a warm and non-judgmental space.
I practice Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) with an emphasis on mindfulness and energy.
I specialize in
borderline personality disorder
Mindfulness is not a new concept and has been practiced by many different cultures all over the world for centuries.
It’s history is rich and entrenched in Eastern philosophies and practices. Mindfulness was embraced by Western culture with open arms.
The modern world is so busy and restless and any chance to quiet the "chaos" and look inward is welcomed; that is why I choose to bring mindfulness into my practice.
Mindfulness is really just about learning where to focus your attention.
“Mindfulness is currently defined in psychological terms as being characterized by paying total attention to the present moment with a non-judgmental awareness of inner and outer experiences” (Chiesa, & Serretti, 2011).
Mindfulness in the context of DBT helps you to pay closer attention to your thoughts and emotions. The more you practice mindfulness the better you get at it. If the idea of “mindfulness” is intimidating you’re not alone but rest assured mindfulness can be taught and anyone can do if they put their mind to it =) No pun intended!
Once you’re more mindful and aware of your thoughts and emotions DBT will give you the tools to work on distress tolerance or how you handle the stressful things in your life.
Mindfulness can help manage the distress of intense negative emotions without trying to block them out or control them.
Dysfunctional and unhealthy thinking patterns develop in response to painful emotions that the individual cannot process and manage. If I can teach you the skills to mindfully experience emotions without reacting, then it’s a lot easier to ride those negative feelings out, kind of like a wave, without feeding into an endless loop of reactions and emotional dysregulation.
These tools will work to give you greater control over your emotions and how you handle stressful situations throughout your day because, let’s face it, our day to day lives can get hectic and overwhelming at times.
Hopefully these skills can help guide you through the chaos and help you gain some perspective and control so that you can remain calm and centered.
I want you to feel welcome and safe so you can express yourself freely. A place with zero judgement.
My practice is inclusive and holistic across race, gender, religion and identity. Just be YOU!
I use a socially and culturally aware lens in my therapeutic approach. I understand how systemic oppression such as sexism, racism, disablism, homophobia etc. can cause mental distress in folks such as anxiety, depression, PTSD and other maladaptive coping mechanisms.
I will use evidence-based therapeutic techniques at a pace that feels comfortable and practical for you.
The first thing that comes to mind when I think about my “approach” to counselling is inspiring and guiding change. And by change, I mean actual behaviour changes or just changes in the way folks think about themselves or a problem in their life. I want to be your compass so that you can find your own way. It can be really hard for some folks to open up and I’d like to try and make that just a little bit easier if I can. If you feel like you’re talking to someone you can trust and who can perhaps give you some useful tools, then I’m halfway there. After all, studies show that nearly 2/3 of treatment success depends on the client and quality of the relationship they have with their therapist (Beutler, 2014).
I want you to feel like you’re the one driving the direction of therapy. I want you to feel like we’re working together as a team on the goals you want to achieve and what you’d like to work on. Meaningful client feedback is a major reason for positive change in treatment, less dropout rates and more sessions attended (Duncan, 2014). I’m merely the co-captain that can offer some tried and true therapy tools. Hopefully I can show you how much I value your opinion throughout our sessions. Your input and advice is going to guide me as far as what the next steps will look like. If it’s important to you then it’s important to me.
I do my best to practice thoughtfully, with an open mind and really listen so that I can become better at helping you. I try and learn from my mistakes, aim to do better the next time and hopefully, with enough practice, make improvements.
My goal is to reach people that otherwise wouldn't or aren't able to access counselling services. Life's hard enough so let's make some things easier, right?
Non-judgmental, down-to-earth, evidence-based counselling services. I offer one-on-one and couple therapy sessions in your preferred mode of delivery (face-to-face, Skype, Face Time, Google Hangouts, e-mail, text etc). Whatever makes you feel most comfortable.
I have a degree in Psychology and certified as a professional counsellor specializing in psychotherapy (RPC) with an RPC-C membership.
I want to hear your story and help give you the tools you need to get back to where you want to be.
